USS Tallahassee (CL-61) under construction, 1 July 1941
Here we see the Cleveland class light cruiser USS Tallahassee (CL-61) at a very early stage in her construction, on 1 July 1941, within a month of being laid down. Early in 1942 she was chosen to be completed as a carrier, and became the Independence class carrier USS Princeton (CVL-23). As the Princeton she was sunk on 24 October 1944, making her the only member of the Cleveland or Independence class ships to be sunk by the Japanese.
